If you wanted a sign, you had to look for a sign-painting service. There were many sign painters available. There are now very few sign painters, but I am fortunate to be able to work with someone who began painting signs in the 1970s. He has told me some fascinating stories about the sign painting industry in the years we've worked together.
When Frank began his business, sign making was quite different. Sign makers used brushes, rulers in different sizes, easels and other tools no longer required. Sign painter's boxes, a tool used by sign makers in the past but not widely known today, was a very popular tool.
Sign painter's boxes allow the artist to adjust their seat height incrementally. To make a good sign, you need to position your body correctly in order to create the desired lines, curves and shapes. It was necessary. The painter could adjust their seat height incrementally by positioning themselves at the right height. The box for the sign painter can be seen in the photo on the right, near Frank's foot. The box had six different heights for the sign painter: 6, 12, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32". The box was 6" deep, 12 " wide and 20" high.
